AppleSkin is an innovative material produced using processing waste from plant-based products. This new biomaterial was developed by the Bolzano-based company Frumat Leather after extensive research, achieved through the addition of eco-friendly products derived from the waste of plant-based product processing, particularly from organic apples in Alto Adige.

PRODUCTION AND ADVANTAGES OF PELLEMELA

AppleSkin is composed of 50% apple peels and cores discarded during industrial processing, which are dried and ground into a very fine powder. The powder is then mixed with 50% PU (polyurethane) and applied to a tear-resistant roll with cotton fabric. These rolls are then heated to create a durable fabric resistant to weathering. From these apple flour-based solutions, a versatile plant-based leather is obtained, with similar uses to real leather, from furniture to fashion, shoes to bags. This fruit-based vegan leather is an innovative material that saves a significant amount of resources and uses fewer chemicals, with a considerably lower environmental impact than traditional leather. This new material is a great example of circular economy: through collaboration between companies and the recovery of biomass, a project is created that focuses on sustainability, giving rise to increasingly ecological products.
